What is Tea Meditation

Tea Meditation in essence is a mindfulnes practice. Mindfulness is about consciously bringing awareness to the here-and-now, and having that experience with openness, interest, and receptiveness …

Simple Tea Meditation

Thich Nhat Hanh has a practice of tea meditation, where you pick up your tea, breathe it in, and bring your mind back to your body. By doing this he says you become fully present in the here and now. Today we will practice a simple tea meditation …

Hearing

Mindfulness meditation is about connecting with our senses to bring us into the present moment, allowing us to experience ourselves, and the world, beyond words and concepts.

Anything can be an object of meditation; the feel of the breath as it comes and goes, our thoughts and emotions, our body, our sense of taste and smell and our sense of hearing.

The aim of meditation is to develop the awareness that we are not our thoughts and we are not our emotions; that these experiences are fleeting, impermanent and they needn’t define us.
Hearing meditation is a form of meditation that helps us experience the impermanent nature of phenomenon, as well as our attachment to it.

As we listen and observe what happens internally, we notice that we are attracted to some sounds, and repelled by others. We can be curious about these: where did they come from? How does it feel like in the body to experience cravings or aversions? What are the thoughts that come up?

In this way we become aware of the automatic judgements or evaluations, we make about everything, sometimes not even being aware of why we hold these judgements. Why do we resist our sometimes uncomfortable feelings, or are they uncomfortable because we resist them …

Combining it all together

You must be completely awake in the present to enjoy the tea.

Only in the awareness of the present, can your hands feel the pleasant warmth of the cup.

Only in the present, can you savor the aroma, taste the sweetness, appreciate the delicacy.

If you are ruminating about the past, or worrying about the future, you will completely miss the experience of enjoying the cup of tea.

You will look down at the cup, and the tea will be gone.

Life is like that.

If you are not fully present, you will look around and it will be gone.

You will have missed the feel, the aroma, the delicacy and beauty of life.

It will seem to be speeding past you. The past is finished.

Learn from it and let it go.

The future is not even here yet. Plan for it, but do not waste your time worrying about it.

Worrying is worthless.

When you stop ruminating about what has already happened, when you stop worrying about what might never happen, then you will be in the present moment.

Then you will begin to experience joy in life.

About the author

The story so far..

My Tea Ritual began from a deep passion for tea and the way it can reconnect you to your true self and the present moment.
I’ve always loved tea, but what I loved even more was the act of drinking it and what it brought to you by the act of mindfully doing so.
Discovering for myself how much it can calm and centre you, I thought this is such a beautiful tool, and such a wonderful platform from which you can bring meditation into your everyday life. Studying the elaborate tea ceremonies of Japan, I got to understand how slow intentional preparation can bring an abundance of benefits.
These benefits I thought would be great to share and are definitely needed in our society today. So I created Tea Ritual, a platform from where I could offer a tea ritual experience bringing the wisdom from the tea ceremonies of Japan to modern day living and providing the tools (audio guided meditations) as perfect instruments to guide us along the way. I wish to offer you a mindful cup of tea.
